Jane Austen's Books
As a novelist Jane Austen was known for her wit, social commentary and exploration of the lives and relationships of the British upper and middle classes in the early 19th century.
Jane Austen's most esteemed novels - all of which will be included in our collection - were:
- Pride and Prejudice (1813) - available now
- Emma (1815)
- Sense and Sensibility (1811)
- Mansfield Park (1814)
- Persuasion (1817)
- Northanger Abbey (1817)
- Love and Friendship and Other Early Works (1790)
These novels offer an unparalleled social critique of the norms of her time - particularly regarding the role of women, marriage, class - and the importance of character. All delivered with a sharp wit and humour.
The intelligence, independence and spirit exhibited by heroines such as Elizabeth Bennet in "Pride and Prejudice" and Emma Woodhouse in "Emma" challenge the conventions of their era and weather the test of two centuries passing to provide inspiration for women of the 21st century.
The themes explored - love, social status, family and personal growth - are universal and continue to resonate with readers today.
