Design and typeset by et al graphic design consultancy
et al Design are a tight knit consortium of design professionals whose aim was to provide highly creative, but equally focused, intelligent design solutions.
Prof. Phil Cleaver is the company founder, a fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, a founding trustee of The Monotype Museum, a board member of the International Type Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Zhouyan Sun worked closely with Phil on this project.
Karen Billingham, Illustrator
Karen has been specially commissioned to illustrate the Jane Austen series. Her drawings will be shown throughout the books, and in full colour in the special editions.
Karen joined Phil Cleaver as an Associate, working with Phil on the design and implementation of identities for several international companies including banks, trusts and organisations.
Now as a principal of et al Karen continues to lead large project identities across a range of sectors, including a special commission for illustration work. Karen also lectures on Graphic Design.
Further to graduating from Epsom School of Art and Design, Surrey based illustrator and designer Karen Billingham has been using and developing her skills in illustration, corporate identity and branding for the last 30 years. Originally a corporate identity specialist working with Phil Cleaver on a wide range of high profile international brands, Karen has more recently blended her design skills with a variety of illustrative outcomes for s wide range of sectors. A passionate illustrator, strong in the belief that art is an important and powerful tool of communication, Karen has been developing a range of illustrative styles and is excited to showcase her line and watercolour art in a series of illustrations for this classic book and high quality publication.
Phil Cleaver
Phil Cleaver is an award-winning graphic designer, author and artist whose character was formed in the labyrinthine City of London, under the influence of (among other things) Punk, the Far East and some of the design industry’s most prominent leaders. His time is split between running the design consultancy et al, his work for impress-publishing.com and his roles as Professor in the Creative Industries at Middlesex University and Visiting Professor of Typography at Birmingham City University. He wrote and designed the international bestseller What They Didn’t Teach You in Design School.
Zhouyan Sun
Born and bred in south east part of China, Zhouyan Sun is now a London based multi-media graphic designer. With a background in industrial design which later directed towards a strong passion for graphic media, she often specialises in typography and editorial design.
From studying at London College of Communication, she has become a skilful and detail-orientated designer who assisted Prof. Phil Cleaver on the design and typesetting of this book.
Freya Scott, founder of Paperwilds
Paperwilds is run by bookbinder, paper artist and photographer Freya Scott. Freya has been a bookbinder for 8 years, and teaching bookbinding and marbling across the UK since 2014. After several years in London, she has upped sticks and is now happily marbling in the beautiful Shropshire countryside. For this special edition of Pride and Prejudice, Freya has mastered new techniques such as calf tree marbling the leather and produced beautiful, marbled endpapers for the lettered editions.
